New player wondering something about the worgen & their unarmed melee.

Hey, so I’ve known about WoW for a very long time and only just recently decided to try it out. I decided I wanted to play a worgen character because I love the concept of playable werewolves in games. I did my first character attempts on the now standard tutorial with the Alliance ship, but noticed after fully completing the tutorial on one it unlocked the normal worgen intro. After some googling the subject of worgens & unarmed melee I can see this is apparently something that is a much lauded subject, but not one with a concrete answer.

I picked up pretty fast that worgen have unique unarmed animations, and a key descriptor in one of the quests about ripping apart the invading force as brutally as possible had me wondering about the game letting you build an unarmed skill on a melee character. I asked some of my friends who have been playing this game since the super early days and they told me this game did in fact have an unarmed skill you could train at one point.

Now, if you’re me and you love playing a werewolf character for the werewolf traits then playing into the visual strength of brutal savagery with the claws is *extremely* appealing. As for the question of the game’s development. I was curious around what point was the unarmed skill removed? Is there any way right now to show off a worgen character using unarmed animations, be it through a unique item or a transmog / etc?

On a closing note / appreciation of the work that went into the worgen: there’s a lot of subtle hints in the way the worgen act, the tooltips of their abilities, and the way their curse is set up in their intro that they’re never actually 100% civilized or fully in control of the beast. Moreso that they let their grip on themselves slip a bit to use their (un)natural abilities, but I worry this well-designed origin may have been forgotten over the years of their existence in favor of “haha silly doggie race go arf”.

  1. The unarmed skill was removed in Cata iirc and worgen released with cata. My guess is the animation was in there for it originally then when they decided to remove weapon proficiency it was just left useless.

I could be wrong, Idr when exactly proficiencies we’re removed

  2. If you want to rp as a rampaging worgen , like me, there are fist weapons that look like claws. I find fury warrior satisfying for this. Enjoy!

  3. It always bugged me that Worgen can’t just use their claws in melee, even if you have fist weapons equipped they make a fist while wielding the weapon. You’re a bloody werewolf! USE YOUR CLAWS!

There never was an “unarmed skill” in the sense of allowing you to fight in melee with no weapons. You might be referring to weapon proficiencies in vanilla through wrath, which was just a passive proficiency bonus that leveled up as you used different weapon types. The “unarmed skill” applied to fist weapons as well, which are still in the game and probably the closest you can get to what you’re asking for, but there never was any gameplay associated with melee characters fighting without weapons outside of the monk class (which isn’t available to worgens)
